We have just finished one of our independent read of the book 12 Ordinary Men by John MacArthur. As a part of our reading we are in charge of signing up for a specific disciple and conducting a lesson on that person.

I am sure by the title of this blog you can figure out who my disciple is. Well actually it is not just Peter but also James the Lesser. But that is not what this blog is about. This blog actually just has a bit to do with Peter.

As I was going back through the chapter on Peter in the book so I can underline things, I was reading over a part and it really hit home for me. I am going to type it how it says in the book:

(the quote starts right after explaining the verse when Jesus told Peter that Satan has asked for him)

"We might have expected Jesus to reassure Peter by
saying 'I'm not going to allow Satan to sift you.'
But He didn't. He essentially let Peter know that He had
given Satan the permission he sought. He would allow the
devil to put Peter to the test (as God did in the case of Job).
He said, in essence 'I'm going to let him do it. I'm going to let
Satan shake you to the very foundations of your life.
Then I'm going to let him toss you in the wind--until there's
ย nothing left but the reality of your faith.' Jesus did assure
Peter that the apostles faith would survive the ordeal.
'I have prayed for you,' Jesus told him, 'that your faith should
not fail; and when you have returned to Me,
strengthen your brethren.' (Luke 22)"

That just really makes one think, doesn't it?! I think so anyway. It is a picture of us. A picture of every Christian everywhere. Whether they are on a missions trip to England, Africa, the Dominican Republic or if you are in your home towne, we are going through the same thing. Satan wants to put us through the grinder and then toss us to the wind. And the thing is...God has given him permission to do that! But our hope and safety lies in the fact through all of that we will be ok because Jesus is praying for us. The only one who matters. The Son of God. The only perfect human. He...is praying for us!

Luke 22:31-32

ย "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

1 Peter 5:8-10

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
